CORRECT DAMAGED TEETH, BONE AND GUMS WITH ORAL SURGERY
Because we are a family dental office at Appalachian Dental Care, we have a wide array of dental treatments available. Normally, we can discuss different dental treatment options. But there are times when your teeth, bone or gums are so damaged that the best option is an oral surgery procedure.
Do Wisdom Teeth Always Have to Be Removed?
Because wisdom teeth (also called third molars) come in well after your other adult teeth are in place, they usually cause dental problems. Sometimes, third molars try to come in underneath part of your other molars.
Other times, the wisdom teeth are impacted, meaning they never fully broke through the gums. This puts you at a higher risk for gum disease and tooth decay at that spot. While it is technically possible for wisdom teeth to come in just fine, they usually have to be removed.
Why Would Other Teeth Need to Be Removed?
Extracting a tooth is always the last resort at our dental office, but sometimes it is the best thing to do. If a tooth is so infected that root canal therapy cannot help, or if a tooth has been so damaged that even a dental crown will not help, leaving it there will only cause you a lot of unnecessary pain.
What Is a Ridge Augmentation?
When many teeth have been removed or lost, the gums and even the jawbone can look a little odd. A ridge augmentation is a surgical procedure that can rebuild the original shape of the bone ridge where all teeth are found. Dr. Airey makes sure each removed tooth’s socket is strong and the ridge is shaped well by grafting bone tissue to the areas as needed.
Why Would I Need a Bone Graft?
Dental implants are a great way to replace lost teeth, but implants require a good amount of healthy bone tissue in your jaw or they will not stay put for too long. Dr. Airey can surgically add extra bone material to a spot with insufficient bone so it is strong enough to take the dental implants.
What If My Sinuses Are in the Way of Dental Implants?
Some people cannot get dental implants in their upper jaw because their sinuses are naturally too low. For these people, we can perform a sinus lift. Dr. Airey creates an opening in the upper jawbone and gently moves the sinus up, then fills in the space with healthy bone material.
Why Would I Need a Gum Graft?
For some patients, gum disease can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth, exposing more of the teeth than is healthy. Plus, it makes your teeth look too big. To fix this, we can perform a gum graft. Dr. Airey will surgically graft healthy gum tissue to the spots where the gumline has receded. Not only does this cover the teeth, but it also makes them look normal again.
