What If You Forgot to Be Dentally Anxious?

By one estimate, more than 150 million people in the United States have some level of dental anxiety or fear. And that’s bad news for the nation’s teeth, because anxiety and fear motivate way too many people to stay away from dentists.

Anxiety is a funny thing. Sometimes, it’s based on a bad experience or just the expectation of having a bad experience. Sometimes, there’s no obvious reason for it. At Appalachian Dental Care in Boone, NC, we take all dental anxiety and fear seriously, and we’re seriously doing something about it.

Start with Comfort

We want you to be as relaxed as possible the moment you walk in the door. That’s why we designed our Boone, NC office to be as comfortable as possible.

We offer comfort items such as neck pillows, blankets, and even massaging chairs to help you relax during your appointment. Our semi-private patient rooms will help you relax in quiet. And since few people enjoy feeling rushed, we can offer longer appointment times and Friday appointments.

The piece of the comfort puzzle is our warm and caring staff. Dr. Airey sets the tone for all of us with his incredible chairside manner. You’ll find every staff member to be friendly, caring, and concerned. We’ll look out for you, and that includes managing your pain.

Dental Pain Isn’t What It Used to Be

It may not be possible to have a dental office that’s completely pain-free for everyone, although we’re still trying. What we can do, and do well, is to use local anesthetics and post-procedure prescribed painkillers when indicated to drop your pain to very manageable levels.

Another plus against dental pain is the fact that dental techniques are constantly improving. They take less time, do less damage to surrounding tissues, and leave patients in less discomfort and with shorter healing times. Many, if not most, of our patients use nothing more than a little over-the-counter pain medication following their procedures.

Dental Sedation Options

Nitrous Oxide

Sometimes, you need a little help to relax while you’re in the chair, and nitrous oxide is the perfect solution. You may know nitrous oxide as “laughing gas.” It’s been used in dental practices for decades and has an excellent safety record.

You wear a small mask over your nose and breathe in the gas during the treatment. It only takes a few second for nitrous oxide to take effect, and you’ll feel relaxed and comfortable. You might even feel a little giggly, which where the gas gets its nickname! The effects disappear almost as fast once the flow of gas is stopped, so you’ll be able to drive yourself home after your appointment.

Oral Sedation

For a deeper level of comfort, we offer oral sedation. This is a pill or tablet that you take before coming to our practice in Boone, NC. But no one should drive under the effects of a sedative, so you’ll need someone to drive to and from your appointment.

Finally, there are times when we can use general anesthesia to help you remember very little, if anything, about your procedure. Again, you’ll need someone else to drive.

Let Us Help You Overcome Your Anxiety

The people who visit our office aren’t just our patients. You’re our friends, our neighbors, and our fellow townspeople. We care about your well being, including your dental health. We’re committed to making each and every dental experience one that is as comfortable as possible. Our goal is to make your next dental visit something that you actually look forward to!
