What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or composite material that are created especially for you. They look like healthier, more aesthetically appealing versions of your natural teeth. Once bonded to your teeth, they conceal dental imperfections, including:
- Discolored teeth. Bleaching treatments only remove stains from the outer layer of the tooth. If your tooth is discolored from the inside, concealing the damage might be your best option.
- Broken, chipped, or fractured teeth. Dental veneers add an extra layer to your tooth for support, meaning that they can have restorative properties in addition to cosmetic benefits!
- Irregularly shaped teeth. If you have an oddly shaped tooth, a dental veneer can improve the look of it.
- Gaps between teeth. Dental veneers can make your teeth look more uniform in size and shape. In turn, this can reduce gaps between teeth and make your smile appear straighter. That’s why dental veneers are sometimes called “instant orthodontics!”
What Are The Different Types Of Dental Veneers?
When people think of dental veneers, they often think of traditional porcelain dental veneers. Lots of people don’t realize that there are different kinds. It makes sense though, right? There shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all approach to dental veneers.
At Appalachian Dental Care, we offer zirconia dental veneers in addition to the traditional porcelain veneers. Generally speaking, porcelain dental veneers are thicker than those made of composite. This makes them durable as well as stain-resistant, but they require more preparation of the tooth to accommodate the veneer.
Don’t let this deter you from all-porcelain veneers, though! There aren’t any nerve ending in your teeth enamel, so the process is practically painless.
Composite dental veneers are usually thinner, which means less of the tooth enamel has to be removed before placement.
What’s The Process For Getting Dental Veneers Made And Placed?
When you come to Appalachian Dental Care for dental veneers, the first thing you’ll do is talk with Dr. Airey about your smile goals. What is it that you don’t like about your smile? If you could fix anything about your teeth, what would it be? What shade of white do you want your new smile to be?
Based on this information, we’ll help you decide which kind of dental veneers best suits your needs. Then, if necessary, we’ll prepare the tooth (or teeth if want multiple dental veneers placed) by removing a small amount of enamel.
We’ll take some digital images of your teeth that will serve as a blueprint for your custom dental veneers. Then, we can use our CEREC system to create your dental veneers!
Afterward, we’ll make sure you’re happy with the fit and the look of the dental veneers. If everything looks great, we’ll bond them to your teeth using a special dental cement. We’ll also cure it with a light to ensure a strong hold.
How Do I Care For My Dental Veneers?
Once your dental veneers are placed, all you have to do is treat them as you would your regular teeth! You’ll brush and floss regularly, as well as keep up with your routine dentist appointments. Avoiding habits like nail-biting or chewing on ice cubes can further protect your investment.
With proper care, your dental veneers can last more than 20 years before they need to be replaced!
