Welcome back to another blog from your friends at Appalachian Dental Care! Today, we have a post for you about dental sedation! Dental sedation can be used to help alleviate dental fear or anxiety for patients who experience it. It can be very helpful in getting patients care that otherwise would be too nervous or scared to seek it. Our Boone, NC dental team is dedicated to healthy smiles, and that means regular dental checkups for everyone … even if you have anxiety. We can help you overcome it!
Let’s talk about the consequences of allowing dental anxiety to keep you from getting care and about how we can help you get the care you need with dental sedation. We will talk briefly about each of our sedation options, but if you have any questions about which of these options is right for you, please contact our team. We would be happy to discuss your situation to determine how we can help.
The Consequences Of Avoiding Dental Care
When you let dental anxiety keep you from getting the dental care you need, a lot of things could happen. At first, you may not notice anything bad. However, after a period of time, problems begin to build. At routine dental checkups, we look for signs of disease, decay, and oral cancer. Without regular checks (and small treatments, if necessary), these things can run rampant in your mouth, ruining your oral health! In addition, we also offer cleanings, which are able to rid your mouth of buildup that your toothbrush simply can’t reach. Without this cleaning, that buildup will continue to grow in your mouth and cause a variety of problems.
Did you know that, if left unchecked, dental problems like decay and gum disease can lead to tooth loss? Gum disease is also linked to total-body problems like inflammation, heart disease, stroke, and decreased kidney function. Do not put yourself at greater risk for these things simply because you are nervous about visiting the dentist! Let our team help you relax with dental sedation.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
If you are only a bit nervous, nitrous oxide sedation (otherwise known as laughing gas) might be perfect for you. This option is very light and is suitable for all ages. It is inhaled via a face mask immediately before treatment and is easily adjusted throughout your procedure. It creates a sense of euphoria for the patient, increasing relaxation levels and making the experience more enjoyable. MANY people who visit our office using nitrous oxide upon occasion to help make their dental experience more comfortable.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is great for patients with a little bit higher level of fear or anxiety. This is a medication that is prescribed and taken before your appointment. Once it gets into your system, you will feel groggy and relaxed. Some people who use oral conscious sedation actually doze off during their appointments!
Are you VERY nervous or fearful about visiting the dentist? Do you have to have a long or complicated procedure? We offer general anesthesia! While many dental offices do not offer this option, we do because it can be extremely helpful in allowing extremely anxious or even phobic patients get the care they need. It is also great for allowing us to get more dental work done in one visit. General anesthesia is perfectly safe to use under our professional supervision. You will be put under and will not remember any details of the procedure, including sights, smells, sounds, or sensations. This is the most comfortable way to get your dental work done because you are essentially asleep!
