You wouldn’t send your kids back to school without notebooks and backpacks; you shouldn’t send them to school without teeth cleanings and other family dental care either! While in theory you can schedule your family’s appointments any time of the year, it’s a good idea to book dental exams and other services before school starts and your calendar fills with activities.
Call Appalachian Dental Care at 828-355-5673 to make appointments for your school-age children – and for yourself too, if you’d like. If you want to schedule visits for more than one family member, let us know; we’ll do our best to see all of you on the same day.
Family Dental Care Starts With Exams & Cleanings
Many people delay dental exams and cleanings when schedules get busy, but don’t do it! We recommend visiting our Boone, NC office every six months for these important services. Skipping exams and cleanings can ultimately cause kids to miss school, which impacts their academic performance. One study found that children in poor oral health were three times more likely to miss school due to dental pain.
We’ll clean the plaque and tartar from your children’s teeth. Even if they brush and floss regularly, they’re almost certainly missing areas between the teeth and around their gums. We may also suggest applying fluoride and/or dental sealants to give them added protection against cavities.
If we find any cavities, Dr. Airey repairs them with a filling. We use fillings made of tooth-colored composite, not metal fillings. They blend in naturally with your smile, so your kids won’t feel self-conscious about silver spots.
Get Custom Mouthguards for Your Kids
If your kids are involved in sports, let Dr. Airey fit them for a custom-made athletic mouthguard. According to an article in the Journal of the American Dental Association,13-39 percent of all dental injuries are sports-related. A mouthguard is the best way to prevent these injuries. If they are involved in sports that involve running, physical contact, and/or balls that spend at least some time in the air, get your children mouthguards.
Dr. Airey takes impressions of their teeth so the mouthguards will fit perfectly and be more comfortable than “boil-and-bite” mouthguards you can buy at stores. If mouthguards aren’t comfortable, your kids may leave them on the sidelines instead of wearing them!
Cosmetic Dentistry Can Make Kids More Confident
If you’ve got children in high school or college, they may want to get cosmetic dentistry procedures before they go back to school. If their smile looks great, they’ll be more confident in both social and academic situations.
Our cosmetic dental treatments include:
- Dental veneers. These cover the front surfaces of teeth to hide flaws like chips, stains, or gaps.
- Teeth whitening. We offer professional-strength whitening gel and custom-made trays to use at home. Your student will be able to whiten while they study!
- Teeth contouring. Dr. Airey uses a laser to give teeth a more pleasing shape with this fast and affordable treatment.
- Tooth bonding. Dr. Airey applies layers of composite to your teeth for this treatment to provide results similar to dental veneers. But unlike veneers, bonding can be done in a single visit.
- Gum reshaping. Dr. Airey can use a laser to painlessly remove excess gum tissue so your student’s smile looks less “gummy.”
