At Appalachian Dental Care, we have several treatments that can restore your teeth back to the way they should be. Our composite fillings repair tooth decay, and our dental implants replace missing teeth. We even have cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening and dental veneers to make sure your smile looks great. But we have one treatment that offers both restorative and cosmetic results: dental crowns.
These are durable caps shaped and colored to look like natural, healthy teeth. At our Boone, NC dental office, we have CEREC technology that allows us to make these crowns specifically for your teeth while you are in our office. CEREC crowns can be made the same day you come in! But are they good for you? Here are six reasons why your teeth could need CEREC crowns.
Reason #1: A cavity is too big for a filling or inlay/onlay. When harmful bacteria start living on the enamel of a tooth, they secrete an acid that eats away at the enamel. This is a slow process, but once the enamel is decayed by the acid, it cannot be regrown. The only way to repair the damage is through a composite filling or an inlay/onlay. But if the cavity was ignored for too long, it might have grown too big for such treatments. For example, putting in a composite filling could put so much pressure on the remaining enamel that you could be at risk for breaking the tooth apart. In these cases, our CEREC dental crowns will seal over any damage to stop bacteria from starting the problem over again there as well as making the tooth strong enough to use normally.
Reason #2: A tooth is cracked and ready to fracture open. Although the enamel on your teeth is very strong, it’s not magical. Accidents and injuries can crack or even break your enamel, leaving you with a broken tooth that’s probably very painful. Worse, you are at a much higher risk of getting an infection in your pulp, needing root canal therapy sooner or later. You can’t just glue a broken tooth back together and hope it will stay. Instead, our CEREC crowns will cover over all of the visible part of the tooth. This holds the tooth tight, stopping any cracks from growing and keeping the pulp sealed up and safe. It also lets you get back to eating and drinking without pain.
Reason #3: You need root canal therapy. Cavities are caused by harmful bacteria. These cavities can eventually break through the enamel, allowing that bacteria to get inside the tooth where the pulp is found. Because all of the tooth’s nerve endings are in that pulp, this inner infection can be very painful. The only way to save the tooth and get rid of the pain is root canal therapy, where Dr. Airey will make a small hole in the tooth so he can remove the infected pulp. Because there’s now a hole in your tooth, Dr. Airey will place one of our CEREC crowns over your tooth. This seals up any damage as well as the root canal hole, protecting your tooth while making it stronger.
Reason #4: The enamel on a tooth has worn thin. Your enamel is like armor for your teeth. When it’s healthy, it protects the pulp and nerve endings from all of the food and drink you push past your teeth. (Otherwise, it would hurt a lot every time you ate something.) But as you get older, the enamel can start to wear thin. Accidents can do this, as can repeatedly grinding your teeth in a disorder called bruxism. When this happens, your teeth could be sensitive to heat/cold and have a higher risk of tooth decay. CEREC crowns cover the thin enamel with a protective layer and keep the tooth safe.
Reason #5: You need a dental bridge for a missing tooth. When you are missing a tooth, you’re going to have a harder time eating. Plus, it just looks bad. There are a few ways to treat a missing tooth, but a dental bridge is a great, noninvasive way to put a replacement tooth in that space. A pair of our CEREC crowns (one on each tooth next to the gap) will hold the replacement securely in that spot.
Reason #6: A tooth is very discolored or misshapen. Sometimes, the problem isn’t that a tooth is damaged or hurting you. Maybe it just looks awful. People sometimes have teeth that have been discolored on the inside (through trauma or side effects of medication) or just misshapen for some reason. Because our CEREC dental crowns are made to order, the team at our Boone, NC dental office can make sure your crown looks like a healthy, beautiful tooth. When placed over the ugly tooth, you suddenly have one that looks great.
