In our last blog, we shared some important ways you can benefit from the dentist. A skilled dentist can enhance your smile, replace teeth, relieve oral pain, and address strange or unusual symptoms. At Appalachian Dental Care, Dr. Airey has the extensive training to address just about any smile situation you could have. Take a look at four more ways he can improve your smile health and even general health. Then take action and call our Boone, NC dentist office at 828-355-5673 for help.
1. Treat bleeding gums.
In our last blog, we said that we can get you out of dental pain. Bleeding gums definitely falls under this category. If you’ve had bleeding gums for a while, especially if they’re accompanied by any of these symptoms, it’s time to call us:
- Tender gums
- Red gums
- Inflamed gums
- Pockets in your gums
- Gums pulling away from your teeth
- Sensitivity or pain in your tooth roots
- Loose teeth
- A change in your bite (the way it feels when you eat, for example, or the way your teeth come together)
- Chronic bad breath that won’t go away
If you’ve noticed just a little blood when you brush or floss, chances are you have gingivitis. This is the early stage of gum disease, and up to half of all adults will have it. Improving your oral health care at home – brushing twice a day for two to three minutes and flossing once – can take care of the problem. That’s in addition to visiting our office for regular dental cleanings.
Sometimes, leaving this problem untreated for too long can result in chronic gum disease. If that’s the case, we can provide gum disease treatment to manage the disease and restore health to your mouth.
Dr. Airey has received so much training in this area that he can even repair receding gums.
Gum disease can be sneaky. Sometimes you may not notice anything, but damage has already been done. If you haven’t been to the dentist recently, make an appointment. We’ll check your gums thoroughly during your exam.
2. Stop snoring.
What? you might be asking after reading that heading. It’s not the first time we’ve gotten that reaction after telling people we can help them stop snoring.
Chronic, loud snoring is sometimes more than just a pain for your partner. It can indicate that you have sleep apnea. This sleep disorder can make you tired because – even if you don’t realize it – it causes you to stop breathing several times during the night. Some people stop breathing 30 or more times an hour! That’s enough to make you exhausted and lethargic the next day. But there’s more at stake:
- Higher risk of high blood pressure
- Higher risk of heart attack
- Higher risk of stroke
- Increased chance of car accidents from falling asleep at the wheel
- Weight gain
- Problems concentrating at work
- Chronic headaches
Many people decide not to do anything if they have sleep apnea because they think they need a CPAP machine. This machine pumps air into your nose while you sleep. It can be uncomfortable, loud, and inconvenient. We offer custom sleep appliances that simply reposition your jaw and allow air to get through. Dr. Airey himself wears one.
With our 3D imaging and thorough exam, we can find out quickly if a custom oral appliance can help you sleep better and stay healthier.
3. Relieve jaw pain and migraines.
- Go to bed without headaches and wake up with them?
- Have problems opening your jaw?
- Hear grinding, popping, or clicking in your jaw when you move it around?
- Frequently experience jaw pain?
- Feel jaw pain or facial fatigue when eating?
- Get your jaw stuck?
- Grind or clench your teeth during sleep or during stressful times?
If any of these describe you, you may have what’s called TMJ disorder, or TMD. This is a condition affecting your jaw joints. We can provide relief with a custom bite guard or splint. Many people say their symptoms improve or even go away after wearing this at night. That includes chronic headaches that no one else could help with.
4. Prevent dental problems with routine care.
We recommend patients come in every six months for routine dental cleanings and exams. With our skilled hygiene team, Dr. Airey’s thorough exams, digital imaging, and people who listen to your concerns, we can help you keep your smile in great shape for life.
If you’re worried about visiting the dentist, why not stop by just to meet us and talk to us? If that’s not enough to help, we can provide dental sedation to relax you. Our blankets, pillows, and massaging chairs help, too!
With the right professionals on your side, there are so many ways you can benefit from the dentist. If any of these describe you or someone you love, don’t wait and hope things will change.
